Hey everybody. It is your favorite stylist. Here. It is Melanie Day with You've Got Curls and Hair Loss Center located here in Lexington, Kentucky. And I am sharing with you hair care tips. That is what I do. I love talking about healthy hair and helping you achieve the best hair ever.
But today I want to share a story with you. I want to share my story with you. Can I let you know, what I personally went through with my hair when I was transitioning from relaxer to natural?
So it was a while ago, probably over 12 to 16 years ago. And so I was coming out of my relaxer and really had no idea which products to use, to repair the damage that I had done to my hair. Of course, caring for textured hair wasn’t a part of my education so I was sort of going in without direction.
So I went to the store and I bought this tub of conditioner that said for dry, brittle hair. I specifically remember that and I'm using it faithfully, religiously every single week. I’m putting it in my hair because my hair is dry, it is brittle, and it is damaged, and this product is going to help. Right?
After a while of using this, I go to get my hair done by my friend who is also my long-time stylist. So my stylist friend, she says, “Melanie, who's cutting your hair?”
I'm like, “No one's cutting my hair. You're the only one that cuts my hair. You should know this.”
That’s when she told me my hair was breaking. It was literally falling out. And of course, deep down I knew that. My hair was coming out in clumps. I was just too ashamed to admit that to myself.
So what had gone wrong? I was using the ‘right product’ for my hair. Right?
Wrong. What I was using every single week for, I don't know how long, was a protein treatment.
So why was this wrong for me? In this week’s video, I demonstrate how a protein treatment actually works, but essentially I was overloading my hair shaft with protein, building too much structure, and getting rid of all of the elasticity. There was no bounce back, and so it was breaking.
My hair was basically cutting itself because I chose the wrong product.
I felt really bad because I had just graduated from beauty school. I should have known what to do with my hair. But I didn’t and I was relying on the messaging on the bottle that said for dry, brittle hair.
That’s why you need to partner with someone licensed and experienced with your hair texture. Someone that’s focused on helping you build your haircare routine in the salon and at home. They’re going to teach you how to really read product labels and understand what your hair needs to meet your hair goals.
So that was my story, that’s what I was missing from my routine. I had a good stylist, but I wasn’t getting that at-home guidance to help me build on my education. My hair fully recovered after that, but I wanted to share you aren’t alone in your hair mishaps. I hear you, I see you, and I’ve been you before, and that’s why I’m so committed to helping you. When you have a good hair care regimen, a routine, and a team that's working behind you like myself, that’s going to help you reach your goals.
So I hope this story was helpful. I hope it was inspirational in the sense that we all have been there. We're all, you know, trying to learn and figure things out.
But at the end of the day, that’s not a bad thing. It's okay. And that our hair will bounce back. It just takes time. So you have to be patient.
I hope this was helpful. If it was, please share the story with your friends and family, because sharing is caring. And if you like the content that we're making, let us know. And if you have suggestions of what you would like to see or questions, let us know too.
Until next time, take care.
