Hey everybody, it is the one and only Melanie Day with You've Got Curls and Hair Loss Center.

As always, I’m bringing you the right information about the right products, the right techniques, and just how to have the right hair care regimen at home.

So you know me, I always like to make sure that I share factual information when it comes to hair care. I’m also all about debunking any type of myths that we hear within our social circles or on social media.

So with the weather changing, we know that things get a little bit drier. I wanted to share some myths that I'm actually hearing behind the chair with clients and then also kind of like what I'm seeing on social media when it comes to why hair is drier and what clients are actually putting in their hair.

So this is a tip, well more of a question than a tip, that someone had mentioned online. They said ‘For daily moisture I spray my hair every day with more water. Is that a good idea or is that a bad idea?”  So, let's talk about it.

In theory, water sounds like a great idea. You've probably heard me talk about hydration and moisture and things like that. But water isn’t going to be hydrating when you apply it directly to your hair. And we have some really great real world examples of hair not being hydrated by water.

But let's take for example a wet sponge. If we had a wet sponge, and we, you know, completely soak that sponge into water, let’s think about what happens as that sponge starts to dry.  Are you picturing it in your head? Eventually the sponge starts to expand and it starts to dry out. It doesn't really feel soft anymore like it initially did when it was first immersed in the water.

Hair is basically the same thing! It’s going to react in the same ways.

Like I've always said, hair is a fabric. It can mimic silk, cotton, denim, wool, or poly blend, or anything in the middle.  When the water hits that sponge, it expands and swells and puffs up. Well, when your hair expands it kind of blows up the cuticle too.

So, instead of using just straight water for your moisturizer you actually want to use conditioning agents that have water as an ingredient inside of them.

For example the product Stain Tame ny Decca Plus has moisturizers in it but also is water based.  If you’re wearing a protective style, like locks or if your hair is up like mine is right now, maybe try Refresh By GIRL + HAIR. These are things I offer in my studio, as well as on my website because they work so well.

They’re for daily use to keep your hair nourished and keeping it hydrated

For my friends with shorter hair, cropped hair, or clients specifically looking to keep their ends, Decca Plus also has an option called Instant Conditioner.

Restore by GIRL + Hair is going to work to lock in moisture, and is recommended for protective styles as well.

When you make a purchase over a hundred dollars you’ll also receive a free healthy hair at home guide, where I go into greater detail on how to use the products to build a hair care regime. There’s also information on how to choose the right products in the future.

I know that was kind of brief, but I wanted to get that myth debunked. When people are saying water is a really good moisturizer, that’s not going to be true.

It can actually have the opposite effect depending on what part of the country or world you’re in since not all water is created equally. There's lots of minerals and deposits and things that just naturally dry out the hair.

Hair is a fabric so you want to make sure you’re using products that are moisturizers, conditioners, and hydrators for your hair, just like you do for your clothing, not just straight water.

If you want to use water for hydration, I recommend drinking water rather than applying it.

I hope this was helpful, if it was please share it with your friends or family.
